The Gotham Cocktail

Some of you may be aware that Chris and I have made some significant monetary investments in the past 2 years (wedding, new house, new car, grad school for me, etc.). As a result, in an attempt at frugality, many of our gifts to each other have become dual gifts that we'll both use. The Joy of Mixology is a perfect example - I got it for Chris as a birthday gift, but it was really for both of us.

You're going be hearing a lot about this book. Our new best friend Gary Regan has excellent taste with a good balance of creativity and respect for the classics. This cocktail is an example of something new - as adapted by another cocktail master (David Wondrich) for the debut of Gotham magazine. I prefer to think that it's the kind of thing Bruce Wayne would drink.

The Gotham Cocktail
from The Joy of Mixology
(for one serving)

2 oz. cognac
1 oz. dry vermouth
1/2 oz. creme de cassis
2 dashes fresh lemon juice (basically, one squeeze of a lemon quarter)
lemon peel for garnish

- Stir vigorously with cracked ice in a shaker - personally, I think shaking would work fine, too.
- Pour into a chilled cocktail glass.
